Presentation: Valuing All Voices - Developing a Trauma-Informed, Intersectional Framework for Patient and Public Engagement in Health Research

This presentation was delivered in March 2019, at the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement鈥檚 Diversity in Patient Engagement Learning Exchange event. Carolyn Shimmin, Patricia Roche and Serena Hickes (from the Manitoba SPOR Support Unit at the George & Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation) shared their work in using Valuing All Voices as a framework.

Valuing All Voices is a framework created in response to feedback from Manitoba patients, caregivers, families, communities, healthcare practitioners, decision-makers, researchers and other stakeholders around the need for more meaningful and inclusive patient and public engagement in health research.

Valuing All Voices supplements existing patient and public engagement frameworks. It promotes a social justice and health equity lens that incorporates a trauma-informed, intersectional analysis and critical reflexive practice into engagement approaches. Intersections of identities, power and trauma must be considered when engaging voices who are traditionally less heard, and critical reflection undertaken to avoid re-traumatization.
