The Canadian Harkness Fellowship enables some of the best and brightest thinkers and leaders in Canada to participate in the Commonwealth Fund's International Program in Health Policy and Practice.

Program overview :

  • Canadian Harkness Fellowship

Harkness Fellowships offer a unique opportunity for promising mid-career professionals who share our passion for safe and high-quality healthcare - including health and social service providers, researchers, policy-makers, journalists and others with improvement experience. fellows spend a year in the U.S., supported by a mentor, researching healthcare delivery system reform and critical issues that are on the current healthcare policy agenda in the U.S. and Canada.

Following the fellowship, alumni can apply their knowledge and experience to healthcare improvements in Canada and often progress to senior leadership positions within academia, government and healthcare organizations. Alumni benefit from the strong and lasting network of international contacts they develop through the fellowship.

The Harkness Fellowship awards funding to cover: roundtrip airfare to the U.S.,  living allowance, project-related travel and research, health insurance, and U.S. federal and state taxes. Supplemental funding for the fellows’ accompanying family is also included.

The 2025-26 Harkness Fellowship call for applications is now open until November 1, 2024.
